Against The Grain @ Mavern Ramsay Gallery
Friday night saw the opening of a new gallery space in Northcote along with a new batch of artwork from a number of Melbourne’s most talented street and graffiti artists. A make shift gallery from a disused warehouse, there’s a real chance to have a fresh show with work unseen by the public, which this show has, making it a must in your gallery journeys.
Walking into Mavern Ramsay, you are faced with two rooms of artwork by Mupz, Nock and Dirte, some of Melbourne’s very talented graffiti writers. But as most of you should know, some graffiti writers don’t limit themselves to just letters and pieces, evolving from the initial beginnings is a good way to get better and better at your craft. This show is a great example of a group of guys really flexing their artistic muscles with a collection of pieces that will surprise and impress any of those that see it. With a relatively young group, this is a great introduction to a group of artists who’s work we’re used to seeing on a large scale and at a bloody cheap price to boot.
This was one of the few shows I ever go to where I was a bit preoccupied after running into some mates and while I enjoyed the show while being there and seeing them in the flesh, after seeing these photo’s on the computer back at home, I felt like I missed out on something. This is a great show, one I’m going to go back to before it closes, the styles of work are all different, but are visually linked at the same time. The tone and line work is all very similar, but each piece has its own design and creative difference, but they each look like they’re from the same world. A lot of people think that if artists spend enough time with each other, they’ll eventually share the same aesthetics, yes its most likely true, but when seen collectively like this its a great sight to confront. Each of these pieces look like a window into a world none of us are in, while being completely surrounded by it.
This fantastic show runs until October 19, don’t miss out. Good luck to guys at Mavern Ramsay for all future endeavours!
